या संस्थेच्या माध्यमातून कंदवर्गीय पिकांबाबत सखोल संशोधन केले जाते. या संस्थेचे विभागीय संशोधन केंद्र ओडिशा राज्यातील भुवनेश्वर येथे आहे. या संस्थेच्या अंतर्गत देशातील 12 कृषी विद्यापीठे, चार भारतीय कृषी संशोधन परिषदेची केंद्रे आणि केंद्रीय कृषी विद्यापीठामध्ये विशेष कंदवर्गीय पीक संशोधन प्रकल्प कार्यरत आहेत.
भुवनेश्वर येथील विभागीय संशोधन केंद्रामध्ये पूर्व आणि ईशान्य राज्यातील कंदवर्गीय पिकांबाबत अधिक संशोधन केले जाते.
या संस्थेच्या माध्यमातून विविध कंदवर्गीय पिकांच्या जातींची निर्मिती, उत्पादनतंत्र, प्रक्रिया याविषयी संशोधन केले जाते. प्रत्येक राज्यातील कंद पिकाचे महत्त्व लक्षात घेऊन या संस्थेने विविध कंदवर्गीय पिकांच्या जाती प्रसारित केलेल्या आहेत. यामध्ये प्रामुख्याने साबूदाण्याच्या 10 जाती, रताळ्याच्या 14 जाती, गोराडूच्या सात जाती, अळू कंदाच्या सात जाती, एलिफंट फूट पिकाच्या तीन जाती आणि याम बीनची एक जात या संस्थेने विकसित केली आहे. विशेषतः रताळ्याची श्री भद्रा, श्रीवर्धिनी, आरएस-47, लेसर यामची कोकण कांचन, अळूची जात सतमुखी, एलिफंट फूट याम या पिकाची गजेंद्र, याम बीन पिकाची आरएम-1 या जातींना शेतकऱ्यांकडून विशेष मागणी आहे.
जातींच्या विकासाबरोबरीने संस्थेने पीक व्यवस्थापन, एकात्मिक, कीड रोगनियंत्रणाचे उपाय, काढणीपश्चात तंत्रज्ञान, प्रक्रिया तंत्रज्ञानाबाबत विशेष संशोधन केले जाते. संस्थेच्या विस्तार केंद्राच्या माध्यमातून संशोधन आणि तंत्रज्ञानाचा प्रसार करण्यात येत आहे. संस्थेच्या माध्यमातून विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी विशेष प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम राबविला जातो. तसेच कृषी विभाग, संशोधकांसाठी वेळोवेळी प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रमांचे आयोजन केले जाते. कंदवर्गीय पिकांपासून विविध पदार्थ तयार करण्याचे प्रशिक्षण महिला बचत गटांना दिले जाते. तसेच नवीन संशोधनाच्या प्रसारासाठी शेतकऱ्यांच्या शेतावर प्रात्यक्षिकांचे आयोजन केले जाते.
